How we worked it out

Updated as you change the numbers.

  1. Write both as fractions: 5/2 and 3/4.
  2. Common denominator 4: 10/4 + 3/4 = 13/4.
  3. Simplify by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor.

Method and assumptions

Fractions are added or subtracted over their least common denominator, multiplied top by top and bottom by bottom, and divided by multiplying by the reciprocal. The result is reduced by the greatest common divisor and written as a mixed number when it is more than one whole.
