How we worked it out

Updated as you change the numbers.

  1. Evaluated with the usual order: brackets, powers (right to left), multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction. Angles in degrees.

Method and assumptions

The expression is parsed and evaluated in your browser with standard precedence. A number next to a bracket or a name multiplies (2π, 3(4 + 1)). log is base 10 and ln is natural; x! is the factorial, extended to non-integers by the gamma function. Results use double-precision arithmetic, accurate to about 15 significant digits.

Questions

Is −3^2 equal to 9 or −9?

−9. Powers are evaluated before the minus sign, as in standard math notation. Write (−3)^2 for 9.
